mrdunlop944
I did a write on Alpine Autowerks new location, on how I helped out getting a few things finished around the shop for Marc and Barb. I knew I had a number of maintenance items that needed to be worked on for my 944 and worked out a deal with Marc. My list was as followed. Bilstien HD front struts rear shocks Porsche motor mounts Air/oil separator seals After striking a deal with Marc we were a go on the repairs. dropped off the car and waited for the call. To my behold Marc added a few more items to my list, his parts were as followed. Ignition cool Transaxle mounts New oil pan gasket New rod bearings and nuts. Liquimoly 5-40 oil/filter This was above and beyond my expectations of what we originally agreed on, Marc went out of his way to make sure I was happy with our trade in services. We new it needed an oil pan gasket in the near future And since your in there new rod bearings were right there. 245K KM and all looked great no scoring, burning or discolouration were visible just looked like gently used bearings. Here are some iPhone photos of the progress..... ^Front end out to access old motor mounts ^filling the strut housing with power steering fluid to help disparate the heat ^this is the point where the oil pan gasket was in question of being replaced ^oil pan in the cleaning tank ^Inside of oil pan was spotless light clean up of old oil and all set ^old motor mount VS new motor mount. Note the height difference. ^Since we're in there Rod bearings and nuts were next ^new and old bearings I guess now all I can do is put it away for the winter to be ready for next summer. This will for surly be the longest winter wait of my life haha. Thanks Alpine ,Mark and Barb you guys are amazing!! malcolm
all makes WYAI good sense Mike.......dropping the oil pan gives great access to the bowels of the engine that havent been exposed since Hans and Franz put it together in Stuggart. Also makes sense to do the transaxle mounts when doing the motor mounts..........balances the engine, torque tube and gearbox. Did you go with Bilstiens front and back? mrdunlop944
Hey Malcolm, You are correct about the trans mounts, they play a big roll in keeping things aligned and balanced should be replaced with the motor mounts. They were original so 31 years old wasn't cutting it anymore haha. As for Hans and Franz they did an exceptional job at assembling the bowels. All looked like new inside there, good oil and frequent oil changes will keep everything clean and properly running. I did go with Bilstien HD front and rear, I didn't have a picture of the rear install. I get the car back this morning from the alignment shop very excited to see how much better it drives and what vibrations have been cured from the repairs.... mrdunlop944
Alex, Yes that is them haha.....Stuttgart born and raised. So I thought I would add an update on the road test, This will be the closet I'll ever get to driving a new 944. It is so smooth with very minimal vibrations the shifting has been vastly improved and my oil pressure and overall engine running condition is fantastic. Bilstien HD's were firm and planted. Now to out wait old man winter. Thanks for reading! malcolm
Great stuff Mike. something I learned long ago of driving older Porsches.......these were fantastic cars in their day and in some cases supercars. Some folks are quick to add 'go faster' parts in thought to get them up to modern spec but before one does that get the car back to where it left the factory then make a decision. 175mph back then is still 175mph today. mrdunlop944
Malcolm, The 944 series has a near perfect 50/50 weight ratio, tuning the suspension is really the only way to get around the track/roads faster in these cars. Trying to add power to the 2.5na motor is really tricky they were built for longevity and are very robust. It would cost me thousands in order to bump up the HP on the NA motor, cost over HP makes it not worth it and NO there will never be Chevy V8 swap in the future Haha. Here is my suspension work..... Factory parts 23mm tortion bars 160Lb front springs 20mm front sway bar No rear sway bar (optional 14mm rear bar) mine didn't come with it Sachs factory strut/shocks My upgrades, all Porsche factory parts This is the M030 package 25.5mm turbo S tortion bars lowered to Euro hight 200Lb weltmister front springs lowered the car 1 1/4" Euro hight Turbo 24mm front sway bars Turbo 18mm rear sway bar Bilstien HD front/rear Complete front/rear new old stock bushings all of them replaced. ^Worked performed by Alpine Autowerks thanks guys Just a very well sorted early 944 with all the right upgrades. One day my 944 will receive the 968 motor and 968 6 speed trans. mrdunlop944
Alex, My Uncle didn't get to see the car this summer. Next summer will blow him away at how far I have brought this 944. My last visit with him I could tell the connection and how attached he still was to the car. The first words to come out of his mouth were "can I drive it?" I think the next time we meet it might go something like "can I buy it back" haha ^Thanks guys this has been fun I really love my 944 sorry if anyone is getting tired of my posts haha Mike Quote 84 944 SOLD 85 944/1 85.5 944 Parts car Sold 86 944 SOLD 86 944 Turbo SOLD 88 944S parts car sold 88 924S Sold 88 944 Turbo S SOLD 89 944 Turbo 90 944S2 coupe Sold 90 944S2 coupe Parts car Sold 90 944S2 Cabrio SOLD Link to comment
malcolm
your a young man after my own heart........just amazing what an older car with some newer tech components can do without dropping in a 'big block', super or turbo charger..........cheers Edited November 21, 2015 by malcolm Quote '21 Macan GTS PDK Miami Blue/Black, 7k kms '93 928 GTS 5 speed Polar Silver/Linen, 192k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Black/Ivory, 190k kms '09 Cayenne GTS Tiptronic Nordic Gold/Black, +336k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Red/Champagne, 110k miles (US car) Link to comment
mrdunlop944
The 944 is back up at Alpine Autowerks for the Oil/Air separator ORings as they are leaking also having a new fuel pump installed due to a leak. With the intake manifold off, the top half of the engine is exposed. Marc gave me a call and said to come on down and clean up parts on the engine that haven't been exposed for 31 years. Oven cleaner and SOS pads were used on the intake manifold and it came out looking like new. Carb cleaner and rags were used to clean up the top half of the motor. I think the results speak for themselves. Here are a couple pictures I wish I had taken the before shots. Sorry for the sideways pictures. mrdunlop944
Alex, Yes I feel very privileged, not many repair shops even allow you in the back let alone work on your own vehicle. Once again Marc goes above and beyond by oiling all door locks, oiled rear hatch and pins, oiled headlight hinges etc.., horn fix and a new rubber plug for my timing belt inspection hole. Marc also sprayed my aluminum engine parts with the factory correct spray wax to protect against corrosion. This was all courtesy of Marc and how he truly is passionate about his customers and for Porsche, especially if it's a 944 If you have any repair work be big or small contact Marc at Alpine Autowerks you will be well taken care of I assure you.
