928 transmission service

The 928 S4 transmission is a tiptronic gearbox from Mercedes.

As with most boxes of this type they require periodic service and although I did do it once before it was many years ago it was time to repeat.

The transmission pan has its own drain plug.........simple enough remove and allow fluid to drain. There's a separate drain on the torque converter that requires the engine to be at approx. 20 BTDC for the plug to align for removal and drain....my significant other agreed to observe the position of the plug as I rotated the engine by hand.......the joys of a car lift :)

Once both plugs are removed and drained (one beer at least) the transmission pan can be removed and the filter accessed. 3 screws hold the filter in place and after they're removed the filter can be removed and a new installed.

Once the pan is cleaned and a new gasket installed it can be bolted back in position along with the 2 drain plugs with new crush washers.

Adding fresh oil is not so easy as the Merc transmission is a tight fit so a long hose with funnel is fed around the passenger rear wheel and into the gbox oil reservoir. Fill until full, start engine and cycle gbox through gears to allow the new fluid to pump through and add more fluid until level is between the marks, a very tight window of correct level.

All good, cap the oil res. and test drive.

Slick gear shifts up to and beyond double speed limits all is good. Not bad for a transmission that's now close to 30 years old :)

Nice work Malcolm, simple maintenance equals longevity.

Mines about due for break fluid and will probably due the transaxle fluid at the same time as it's mid life, cheap maintenance, good piece of mind.
