Drive In Movie Night ...

Hey guys, just wondering if the drive in movie night with the VW club is still on this Friday night?

Can't seem to see any info whatsoever about it on the Clubveedub website.

Would like to know what movie they are planning to show to know if it would be ok for kids etc. How would we hear it? If it's windows down I know the mosquitos were TERRIBLE out that way earlier in the year.

Any info appreciated if anyone has any! (or knows anyone at the VW club)

Hey Jim,

I play in the VW world as well... The Drive-In Movie night at Race City is back on, after being cancelled for a bit there (which is why the details are kind of hard to come by).

This is the VW Club's big "Das Volks" show weekend, with things going on friday night through sunday. If you're interested, Friday night the VW's show up in (relative) force at Race City's drag races. There's some hot rodded Beetle's that'll surprise you in how quick they can be (1600 lb curb weights help), and for a few laughs it can be fun to watch a couple of early buses battle for quarter mile/36HP supremacy. :)

After the friday night races (at dusk) is the drive in movie, I recall from last year being held in the back parking lot just south of the main race city entrance. Cost I think is $15 per carload. There was a poll being conducted about the movie selection. Final selection hasn't been finalized or announced just yet, but American Graffiti was the leading contender last time I checked. Here's a link to the poll, where the final selection is likely to be posted early this week: http://www.clubveedub.ca/forums/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=42578

And if you're into the other aircooled's (or more modern VW's), the actual car show in held on Sunday at Stanley Park on the grass, similar to the recent Vintage Euro show. Details on all the weekend activities here: http://www.clubveedub.ca/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=42317

If you're thinking of coming out and are still struggling to locate details (or get lost), I'm planning on being around at the races/movie etc. You can call me on my cell phone prior, or look for the guy in the red NARP (playing NARVW for the weekend)...

Ian - thanks a lot for your info. Sounds like a great weekend for our german brothers (cousins?). Wasn't aware it is a whole weekend of events - I just may drop in to the car show as well. Thanks again.

I'll be going with my daughter, if you are too, look me up. Our night is going to start at the secret street races at Race City. Its a mixture of the regular secret street drag crowd, plus a few VW's thrown in. We'll be attempting to get there a little early, but the races actually start at 7:30pm, and run to about dusk. Take some bug spray!

Then the movie starts afterwards, barring severe winds/rain (where they can't set up the screen). I'm still unaware of the official movie title they're playing, but it'll be something car related, which is cool. If you're thinking of stopping by for the Sunday car show, please note that the cost indicated is for people putting their car into the show, spectating is always free.

Anyways, for those interested, here's the latest info compiled from a few different threads on the CVD site.

DRIVE-IN MOVIE RAIN-OUT PLAN

http://www.clubveedub.ca/forums/styles/cvd_beetle/imageset/icon_post_target.gifby beetle.babe » Fri Jul 30, 2010 1:21 pm

Okay. This is the dealio.

The Movie goes on rain or shine, unless there is lightning/high wind that will prevent the screen from going up.

IF by 8pm, the guys haven't been able to set up the screen, we're going to have to figure out PLAN B. But, even if it's raining a little, the drive-in movie can go ahead as planned, minus outdoor speakers.

Which sucks for everyone in a non-modified air-cooled.

So this is your official heads' up. I think we'll be okay for tonight. But JUST IN CASE, maybe you should bring a blanket and a battery operated FM Radio.

I'll keep everyone posted as I have information. Don't hesitate to e-mail/text me. I'll be at Race City around 4:45 as well for those who will be going to Race City.

To clarify:

Friday, if it rains, we'll play it by ear, but likely end up at The Mojave Grille in the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, woeing the weather.

Saturday, Breakfast, Poker Run & BBQ are all going ahead. We'll have our tents set up and we'll make it work, and there will be an alternate, covered venue for the evening BBQ.

Sunday, if we are rained out of Stanley Park, we will be hosting our Show & Shine at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino.
