Apparently just out the shop after a crank position sensor change which was causing an occaisional no start.

I would think the usual M96 engine stuff like the IMS bearing. Lots of different opinions on that issue. The mileage is good for the year. Boxsters are a blast!

The seller must have a receipt or something. It would be a selling feature for sure. I don't believe there is any outward way to tell. The process involves removing the muffler to get at the transmission.

Some say if it is higher mileage than no worries, some say it isn't an issue, some say it happens but is very rare, some say it never occurs, some say it happens only to cars that are "babied", etc....

I believe it occurs rarely and one member here had the ims fail and he required a new engine. My independent mechanic believes it is a lot of internet hype but it may happen in 2 to 3 percent of M96 engines (this includes the 911).

If it runs good and had all the maintenance records take it for a ppi. If it is the dealership or independent shop ask how much to replace the bearing with the LN Engineering ceramic one. I think it is cost effective to do it at the same time you replace your clutch. I will have mine done at that time.

Excellence magazine had a very god write up on buying a used boxster a few issues ago. Try searching their website for the article. I could find the issue and let you borrow it. As well, Excellence put out a pdf issue of a used buyers guide. Not sure of the size but I could try emailing that to you.
