Hi,

I just joined a few moments ago. I just received an allocation for a 2025 Boxster GTS 4.0 (link to my build below). I am from Calgary but getting the car from Edmonton due to connections.  I have owned a couple Mazda MX-5s and love them, but I am looking forward to "more power"!

Couple questions:

  • Paint correction / PPF / Ceramic - dealer is offering a decent package and it would be convenient for me as it's no hassle and will be done when I go pickup the car. Otherwise I need to coordinate myself after I pick up the car and potentially spend a night or two in Edmonton before I come home with the car. Thoughts?
  • Is the dashcam prewire worth it? I was planning on using it for a radar detector, but from what I am reading a radar detector can get its power from the mirror - correct?

Link to my build (needs to be locked in by Nov 21): https://porsche-code.com/PSKEVUP7

Looking forward to the 2025 driving season!!

Cheers,
Patrick

Hello Patrick, and welcome to the club! You've started your P-car obsession in the right place.

You may get a few different opinions on your questions, but here's my personal take. My preference would be to use a local PPF installer. I have used Refine Automotive on 5 previous cars and they do excellent work. There are a few other installers that support the club as well, and I have yet to hear of unresolvable issues from any of them. You may want to get a full quote from the dealer and compare their price point with shops in Calgary. Of course the drive down from Edmonton without protection could be an issue, but smart planning/driving can alleviate that.

The same goes for the dashcam prewire. You may be limited as to which camera you purchase if the dealer does it. Once again local shops, such as Mobile Solutions of Calgary are great supporters of the club and can explain all options, including radar detectors.

If you choose either of the above, do let them you are a club member as discounts usually apply.

Your Boxster spec looks awesome, you'll love it.

Hey Patrick, welcome to the club.

I will echo Al, and recommend shopping around for the PPF. In my experience dealerships are more expensive and don't necessarily do a better job.

Taking your car to a shop should be very low risk, especially if you get that done right in Edmonton.

Dashcam install can be done at any time. Using a local shop will simplify things if ever something happens with the install and you need to get additional work done.

Enjoy the new toy!

For paint correction and PPF, in Edmonton I would talk to Auto Obsessed.

In Calgary, I'd speak to Refine Salon or Autokosmetik

On the dash cam pre-wire, it's not critical to get this. If you do you are committed to Porsche's dash cams. If you don't, you can buy a plug and play wiring kit that taps into the reading light power and use any dash cam you like. It's super easy to install and requires no special skills or tools. It takes 5 min max and it's a super clean install and cheap at $50 or so. Something like this will work. https://a.co/d/52AmEry There are tons of choices. Pick your dashcam and pick the wiring kit that has the right connector, length, etc. In some cases (like with the Garmin dashcams) it needs a small USB-C head on the cable and you need to match that to plug into the dashcam. In some cases you will want a usb connector with a 90 degree angle. It will be obvious once you have the dashcam. You can also buy the short usb cables separately on Amazon if you discover you need something a little odd.

If you want someone to do it for you then Mobile Solutions is the right choice in Calgary to help you choose a dashcam and to install it.

Hi Patrick, welcome!  I agree with the others and suggest that you have the PPF done by a third party vs the dealer.  My recommendation would be Renee at Ultimate Auto: Premiere Paint Protection Film Installation Service for Car & Semi Truck, 3M Car Ceramic Coating Service Specialist for Paint Protection Calgary - Ultimate Auto Protection Inc.  My car was originally done by Porsche Centre Edmonton and while the car was well protected, they used a kit so there were seams, etc.  I had it redone and now you would be hard-pressed to detect it's been covered.

Renee also supports the club so you will get a discount there as well.

I wish...

It landed in Halifax on March 12. It had to go through customs and inspection. Scheduled to get on a train bound for Edmonton on March 26. Arrival in Edmonton scheduled for April 9, then the dealer needs to do the PDI.

I'm planning on going to pick it up  April 14 or so. fingers crossed.

I'll reply here when I have exact arrival date.
