malcolm
The 928 having the engine up front and the gbox aft uses a torque tube inbetween. After many years of service the TT bearings either wear out and/or migrate in the tube requiring replacement. My very rare GTS required such service: Quote '21 Macan GTS PDK Miami Blue/Black, 7k kms '93 928 GTS 5 speed Polar Silver/Linen, 192k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Black/Ivory, 190k kms '09 Cayenne GTS Tiptronic Nordic Gold/Black, +336k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Red/Champagne, 110k miles (US car) Link to comment
malcolm
update: from the last pic you can see the clutch was removed to allow the TT to be unbolted from the upper bell housing. With the clutch out (its removed as a complete assembly) the flywheel can removed for inspection/service. The flywheel off gives access to rear crankshaft and the seal which was slightly weeping. In the vane of 'while your at it' I removed the RMS (rear main seal) and the clutch pilot bearing from the crank, both are being replaced. malcolm
I now have the new RMS and clutch pilot brg installed as well the Torque Tube shaft was removed and the 3 bearings. All new clutch parts are now in stock (at home). Next steps are to thoroughly clean the TT, install the new brgs followed by the shaft, install TT between the gbox and engine, add the new clutch assembly, heat shields and exhaust system.......sounds easy Edited April 4, 2015 by malcolm Quote '21 Macan GTS PDK Miami Blue/Black, 7k kms '93 928 GTS 5 speed Polar Silver/Linen, 192k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Black/Ivory, 190k kms '09 Cayenne GTS Tiptronic Nordic Gold/Black, +336k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Red/Champagne, 110k miles (US car) Link to comment
KMR 968 Turbo
Good work! It looks like a clutch replacement on a 928 is much easier than on a 944 Turbo. I would like to pull the clutch on my 968 some time. I wonder if it's as straight forward as the 928? Thanks for sharing. Quote Link to comment

Not exactly sure how it can possibly take that amount of labour, maybe all the glass needs to come out first??? Quote Ian 65 T34 75 914 2.7-6 86 951 Link to comment
malcolm
Porsche engineers were smart with the 928 clutch and TT..........they split the shaft so a stub shaft goes through the clutch which is coupled to the main Torque Tube shaft. Once the coupler is loosend and pushed back the stub shaft can be pulled out of the pilot brg, the clutch pressure plate unbolted from the flywheel and the whole clutch assembly literaly drops out. malcolm
The TT was rebuilt using 3 new bearings and a new shaft (reasoning of torgue over the years). I also replaced the gear shift bushings. Today I manouverd and bolted in the the TT with typical BST with such a long heavy piece.
