Rob996
With spring here and the club runs approaching I decided it was time to install a new High Flow CAT back under my 1986 928S. I was wanting to clean up some of the exhaust smell and do my part to help the environment. I sourced a new Magnaflo dual in/out CAT and was very excited when it arrived. The next step was to get under the car and remove the back sections of pipe. Things were going fine........ That is when the typical "small easy upgrade" became a pain in my back side. The problem with twisting/wiggling old exhaust pipes to get them to separate is that while it may feel like the pipes are separating.......... they are actually tearing! After using a small hammer to tap along the rest of the old front "H" pipe I found a number of soft spots that make the H pipe junk. I am now talking with Roger from 928s-R-Us in Texas to get a new upgraded "X" pipe. I will post some more pics when it arrives and what the install looks like. Keith Adams
Looks like a nice piece! Will it uncork the sound a bunch? Any good 928 videos with exhaust mods? Quote Link to comment
malcolm
Looks like a nice piece! Will it uncork the sound a bunch? Any good 928 videos with exhaust mods? It is indeed. The stock 928 exhaust system is headers either side of the V8 into 2 siamese cats with each out pipe going into individual resonators then coming together into a rear muffler. This piece replaces the OEM cats with the X in an optimal position for a dyno measured 35 HP gain. This combined with the OEM resonators with a RMB (rear muffler bypass.......essentially 2 pipes) provides a nice change to the sound without being overly loud. This is the system I have on my GTS. Rob996
SO Christmas came early this week. I received my new X-Pipe. I have now removed the old H-Pipe. After using a generous amount of Liquid Wrench on the manifold bolts I have the old system on the ground. Here is the entire system ready to go back in this Saturday Morning. malcolm
excellent choice Rob........the X is very well balanced system adding ~35hp to the car............I have it on both my 928s just so the performance is in line with the latest P cars. A side note...........theres a 928 going over 200mph, yes MPH, in this years Nevada run Quote '21 Macan GTS PDK Miami Blue/Black, 7k kms '93 928 GTS 5 speed Polar Silver/Linen, 192k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Black/Ivory, 190k kms '09 Cayenne GTS Tiptronic Nordic Gold/Black, +336k kms '88 928 S4 A/T Red/Champagne, 110k miles (US car) Link to comment

Rob996
That was a great episode but it brought a tear to my eye when they butchered the car to flip the body around. Quote Rob Campbell 2001 996, Cabriolet - Rainforest Green Metallic 1986 928S, India Red - SOLD Link to comment
Rob996
Here are a couple more pics of the final install. The entire install only took an hour and a half. the X-pipe lined up perfectly. We had to stop and think about what we may have done wrong as the holes lined up perfect. (that never happens) The car has a slightly different sound at the high end of the RPM but is sounds better than before. It is even slightly quieter when cruising at 120 KPH.
