Well, with sping never arriving, I've decided to start the 3.3L 930 engine rebuild in my front office where it's absolutly clean, dry and next to the computer for easy access to specs. Look for updates over the next few days as it goes together.

It should be a fun motor -

3.3L 930

K-27 turbo

Andial intercooler

964 cams

Updated air intake

Euro exhaust

Fabspeed muffler

~375 hp

Andrew, I would just absolutely love/lust to have grandstand seats to view your project in the making!

When are you starting? Can I come over and see "what's going down"?

Oh and one more thing,......we should get Brodie and Danielle to set up a WRR-DIY blog in the "Members Only" section....your "project" would definitely qualify!

Andrew,

If you have an extra seat, I too would very much like to see this in the making!

HI Guys - Normally, I would say sure and put some beer in the fridge, but I'm managing the rebuild between workflow here at home it's an hour here and a few hours there, etc. As well, it's about 40 hours to assemble and about 35 hours of that are spent cleaning, cleaning, measuring, cleaning, more measuring, a bit more cleaning, followed by more measuring - tedious work to say the least. I will endeavour to provide photos of key steps as I go though :)

Part 1 - The crank and rods

- Rods balanced to 1g

- Crank polished and crack tested.

- 2 hrs of cleaning with carb cleaner and compressed air with a final wipedown of rubbing alcohol and cleanroom wipes

- New bearings with synthetic assembly lube

- Rods assembled with ARP rod bolts to replace the inferior stock bolts

- Used stretch gauge rather than torque to attach rod bolts

- Promptly put into a xxxxxl ziploc bag until install.

Part 2 - Cylinder head assembly

- Stock 930 heads with new intake valves (exhaust valves were still new spec)

- Beadblasted at Consolidated Compessor in the DIY cabinet

- Valves and seats cut to match up

- Valves then lapped in

- Lots of washing and cleaning

- Valve spring installed height checked and adjusted for the 964 cams (involved addition / subtracion of shims under the spring seat).

- Almost forgot the valve stem seals :)

- Installed performance valve springs

- Time ~ 4 hrs.

Looks good Andrew,

Wish I could convince my wife to let me work on the hardwood floor. I seem to be banished to the basement!

Looking forward to more updates

Hi Andrew

Is this 930 engine project from my infamous wreck? :(

Regardless, certainly look forward to reading your updates and seeing the unit installed and running later this season.

cheers!

Paul - I just point down to my pants and tell the wife - "I'm wearing the pants and I say the crank goes on the hardwood"

Just kidding - I was just moving it from the garage and was just about to put it into a ziploc - It's on the floor, because I've dropped one in the garage a long time ago and I really don't want to see what happens if it falls onto hardwood :)

Rick - Nope, that engine is running around in Edmonton right now. This rebuild is from my 80's time warp that I bought last fall.

Well, after finding out that I had O-ring that was the wrong size yesterday, I'm back on track (thanks Apline!)!

Laying out the items for short block assembly:

Followed with:

- Final cleaning of the case

- Test fit oil pump & intermediate shaft

- Test fit crank assembly (note o-ring not yet fitted at front - needs a touch of silicone before final install in it's groove)

- Short block assembled!

Sorry for no picture of all the stuff installed + the sealant, but it hardens quickly, so it calls for some quick hands to:

- Spread 2 different sealants in different areas

- Fit the cases together

- Fit the case through bolts with silicone paste on the o-rings

- Fit case perimeter nuts

- Torque through bolts in a specific order

- Torque perimeter nuts

- Double check all torques

6 hours of cleaning, 1 hour of test fitting and then 30 minutes to bolt it all together :)

Until the next update,

AM

Keith - She pretty much get whatever she wants anyways :)

Alex - Ha! Good eye. That was the calendar at the shop before I picked it up.

Recently:

- Taped off access to block in prep for P&C install

- Cleaned and assembled the pistons and cylinder assemblies with new rings and circlips (P&Cs were good, in-spec units)

- Installed P&C assemblies

- Installed rebuilt heads

Tomorrow are the cam towers and cam timing :)

And....... Done!

Installed the engine a couple of times last week (clutch bearing ears were off centre the first time), and finally got it started on Friday. Lots of running in at low / mid rpms and different loads over the weekend and an open track night on Monday for a controlled venture into boost territory. Overall - it's a great powerplant in a fantastic chassis :)

Hi Paul - It's wildly exceeded them! I find it amazingly tractable around town with the 3.3 torque - it cruises at 60 kph in second gear at 3k rpm. Beyond 3.5 / 4k it develops a smooth but forceful boost that throws you back in the seat. I can see where it gets addictive!

At the track last night, I was about to rub some dust out of my eye as I went down the front straight, the boost came on and I ened up giving myself a quick jab to the eye instead.
