9Elfer
Hi Barry, Thanks for all the updates, keep the pictures coming! Here's hoping you get her together before the snow flies! I may be making a trip out to Regina before year end, perhaps I could drop by and say hello? I have a few questions about your car, forgive me if the answers have already been posted elsewhere: - 73 Targa? - Your repaint, was it single or two-stage? - Stock motor? Rebuilt? - Who supplied the interior leather? Marc Schroeder 88 Carrera Coupe Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Hi Marc If you are in Regina please drop by and say hello. To answer your quetions -Yes it is a 73 - The paint is supposed to be 2 coats of colour, 2 coats of clear, bake, scuff, 3 more coats of clear, bake. The pictures are pretty good but do not do it full justice. Tha paint still has to be sanded with 1500, 2000 grit and then buffed but it is so deep now you can almost drown in it. -The leather was supplied by Tandy (they have a website). They carry many different grades, colours, etc. It was installed by me. Barry Hi Barry, Thanks for all the updates, keep the pictures coming! Here's hoping you get her together before the snow flies! Guest barryr
Missed one The motor was rebuilt by me in 1983 ish. Then in 200x? I freshened it up and have barely driven it since. The starting point was a 2.4T with mechanical injection. It now has 2.2S pistons and cylinders (10.x? compression). The displacement is still 2.4 but the 2.2 parts bumps the compression a little. Also electronic fuel injection from STS in Calgary. Quote Link to comment
9Elfer
Hi Barry, Impressive work! If I do make it out to Regina I have a feeling the knowledge transfer is going to be "one way"........ With that CR, will the engine run on pump gas or have you done a twin-plug conversion? What are your thoughts on ditching the MFI in favour of EFI? Marc Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Premium gas is required. I would like to twin plug it but as I don't track the car everything is working with no issues. I would really like to go to distributor less ignition in any case. As for MFI over EFI it depends on what you are looking for and what work you are comfortable doing yourself or paying to have done. MFI -original -hard to tune, either yourself or finding an "old timer" with the knowledge. Can take a long time to tune. - the MFI system is mainly dependent on mechanical inputs/sensors. These mechanical indicators wear, need lubrication, need adjustments -very instant throttle response when tuned correctly -in my case very thirsty. I could not figure out the tuning and when my car had the MFI there was no one in Regina that I felt, had a clue. ---start rant---I took my car to a few different "Porsche specialist, knowledgeable mechanics, factory trained" people in the early days of ownership and felt they were all learning on my car. So I got a couple of books and learned myself.---end rant--- EFI -quite a bit of work to install -easy to tune either with a laptop or in the case of SDS EFI supplied box with display and buttons -easy to retune if you change cams, compression ratio, displacement -All electronic sensors -It just works and stays in tune. I think I have been using my system for about 15 years. -Way better mileage in my case Carbs -don't go there This is just my experience-your mileage may vary:) Barry Quote Link to comment
9Elfer
Barry, Good answers - all of them. My curiousity was tweaked as during my recent trip to California, all I saw was MFI with beautiful, red, high butterfly injection stacks! Mind you, many of them were found in track cars (mileage be damned) and if tweaking/rebuilding was required, then the expertise (Herr Bosch) is just down the street. Still, they music they make - sweet! Marc Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
I understand the "music" I have 6 individual stacks under a pair of K&ns on the top of my engine:) Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Polished some scratches out of the side windows today. Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Cleaned out the 38 year old, used to be fuzzy weather stripping and tar? that holds the fuzzy weather stripping in the window channel for both sides. Yesterday tried to re-fit the H1 headlights but I had to adjust the headlight buckets. The flange was too wide all the way around. This required a little protective repaint of the hidden part of the buckets. And blew a day last week looking for the rear part of the window channel for both doors. You know....................I put them in that special place were they will be safe. Quote Link to comment
9Elfer
Barry, Too bad that polishing won't take out the bazillion pits in my 23 year-old windshield! If you hit the sun just right, it's just like driving in a snow storm...... Replacing the window channel weatherstripping this summer netted me power windows that now fly up and down and don't rattle when fully lowered. Driving near Banff late last night reminded me how barely adequate my H5's are. H4's with relays seems to be a popular upgrade. What wattage bulbs are you using? Marc Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Hi Marc I think the kit I used would take out the fine pits but it will take a long time. I used Tin Oxide that I had and then finished with the kit that I bought at Princess Auto for ? $9.00. Kit is by Enkay. I had some very deep scratches that are now gone. It's not just the top or part of the channel you can see. In the targa there is also a channel in the back of the door that a plastic piece slides in. This was full of grease and dirt. In the H1s I use 55 watts for low and 100 for highs. I bought a pair of used H1s to replace my damaged one but the pair was really only 1 and a half. They did come with 130 watt highs so in the spring I'm doing the relay thing. I should of done it years ago. Barry Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Well there is not enough heat in my garage so it is time for storage until spring. Things left to do -properly fit all the weather seals -align the driver's door glass -outside mirrors -thinking about a total recover on the seats before spring. I was just going to do the centre. -put the targa outer cover on. I need 6 hands for this. -recover and put the inside targa cover on -put the door inside panels on -rustproof -tune up - plugs, rotor, cap, check/adjust valves, oil and filter change, adjust fuel injection, clean/refurb my original distributor and put back in. It has a better curve -drive -drive -drive!!!!!! Edited November 27, 2011 by barryr Quote Link to comment

Rick
Hi Barry Just a quick note to say "nice job" on freshening the wheels. Cookie Cutters with black centers (spokes) will really set off your 911. Look forward to seeing pictures when you have them back on the car. cheers! Rick Quote Link to comment

Guest RJ911SC
Barry, What are you using for Rust Proofing? I want to do mine this year, show some pic's of the finished application. Car is looking great! Keep it up Rob Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
In order 1) POR 15, into everywhere I could get it. On the welds and on the new metal. Some of the underside of the car, inside the rockers , fenders etc. Now and when I was putting the new pieces on. 2) Black truck bed liner. Yes bed liner. It comes in a big square can. You can spray, roll or brush it on. I used this on the inside of the fenders and under the rockers. Also on the underside of the car where I could reach. This provides protection from gravel, rocks. It also provides some sound deadening. I need a lift. 3)Rust check. The spray can from Canadian Tire. This stuff is actually rated as high or higher as any professional product. It all comes down to the person applying the product. I used 2 cans of this and may use more in the door and door posts. This stuff leaches into all the fine spots that the other 2 products can't get to. It then firms up and leaves a protective film. You just need to reaply every few years. My car was professionaly rust proofed before I bought it in 1982 and had a bunch of plugged holes from that process that I used to access the interior of the inner rockers. If you are re-doing a car I would remove any loose protective coating and re-apply new. I would get a product that would match the existing colour of the coating. I would then jump to step 3. Be sure to get any fine sand, dust, mosture out before you apply. Once I get on the road the shine on the bed liner will go away. Edited June 18, 2012 by barryr Quote Link to comment

Guest barryr
Thanks Rob! Well I finally finished these. 3 1/2 smaller hides, 3 sewing machines, a few hours teaching myself how to sew and practicing. There are no "re-do's" in leather. Quote Link to comment
Guest barryr
Well it's been a while since i posted here. I finally had time to give the car that tune-up it has needed for a few years. What else are long weekends for? I pulled all the plugs, some were sooty , one was wet, 2 looked passable. I pulled the injectors and confirmed the spray pattern and operation and all were good. My coil wire had way too much resistance, so i replaced it. When i put it all back together each cylinder on the right bank was pulling 10cubic litres a second. At the same rpm the left bank was only pulling 7 cubic litres per second. This explains the lack of power and really high fuel consumption! I can adjust the mixture from within the car while driving. This is good and bad. It does explain why when Cam (red 2001 Turbo) and I, with our wives, drove up for the Lake Louise Celebration and I used more than twice as much gas as Cam.
