2010 is the100th Anniversary of the Car in Banff Park - We should do a Banff Drive

There was a little news story in the Herald on the weekend that peeked my curiosity:

David Finch, Calgary Herald

Published: Sunday, July 25, 2010

Banff is celebrating two anniversaries this year. The first is its 125th year as a national park. The second is the centennial of the arrival of the first car.

W. Heap Holland of Manchester, England, created a considerable stir in the spring of 1910 when he drove an automobile from Calgary to Banff.

The infraction of the park's regulations was done in ignorance of the provision prohibiting 'buzz wagons' in the park limits," the Calgary Herald reported on May 23, 1910.

"Any person who brings one in is liable to a $50 fine." That was a lot of money back in the day -- almost $1,000 in today's currency -- and the park commissioner, "after hearing his evidence, imposed a nominal penalty."

Thus was a fee collected from the first automobile to enter the park.

Perhaps we should do a drive on the Saturday of the September long weekend (Sept 4th) to the Banff Springs for lunch? Anyone have any contacts at the Springs I could contact? I would be great if we could park at the rear rotunda like we did last year with the PCA Polar region.

It would give us all a chance to drive our cars before we clean them up for the Porsche Escape the following week.

ooh that sounds good. I think that Rick would be the man to talk to about that one, if my memory serves me correctly didn't he organize the previous Banff springs one?

Does sound like a good one - and great theme / tie-in.

Currently we have Race City booked on Sept 5 and are considering doing a club event of some type there that weekend. Until this has been ruled out, perhaps we should pick a different weekend for the Banff trip.

UNCLEBILLY:

I'm not sure but there may not be a big overlap between track folks and touring/eating folks. The other issue is it is a long weekend and a lot of people make plans in advance for along weekend so we shouldn't delay too long.

I'll do a little planning and won't announce this until after the Race City Event is decided.

All the best.

The track day at Race City for the September Long Weekend is DEAD.

How would everyone feel about an afternoon autocross at the Nakoda Casino the day of the drive to Banff? Assuming the Nakoda Casino will give us their parking lot for a day on the long weekend, this could be a great event that could draw out members with various interests within our club; drive to Banff in the AM and then have an autocross in Kananaskis on the way back home.

Thoughts? Feedback?

That sounds like a great combo. I'll proceed with contacting the BSH for a reservation if someone else takes on organizing the autocross. I would suggest the autocross start around 2 so as to give people a chance to take their time at lunch and then proceed to Nakoda. Edited by KevinJ

This trip is a go.

Can anyone going please confirm to me via this thread by Friday noon please so I can make reservations.

Plan is to Lake Louise and then to Banff for lunch. Will depart from the Crowfoot Starbucks at 8:00 AM. This will give us time to stop at Lake Luoise, go for a short walk over to the Lake for pictures etc and then to Banff. We may not go to the Springs for lunch as I orginally envisioned - does it matter to anyone if we do not?

More details later this week.

Hi Kevin,

Yvette and myself are in for the run to banff & lake louise. Is it still on the 5th. It dosen't matter where we stop for lunch as long as we stop ( fat guys don't run on air).

Hey Kevin, count us in! I will be staying behind so no autocross for me but I'm excited about this drive, let's get as much in as we can before the snow flies!

I prefer a lunch other then the springs for the fact that the buffet is like 49$ a person... if I was a 300lb. football player that would be worth the money but I can't even stuff 49$ worth of food into my little belly!

I'm good to go and happy to eat wherever. I would maybe just consider parking in the decision as we know it can be a pain anywhere close to Banff Ave and it is nice to be able to park together.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

We are now going to leave Starbucks in Crowfoot at 10 AM so please be there a little before that so we can get away at 10. This gives us a chance to sleep in a little and for the tempertures to warm slightly before we go.

We're not going to lunch at the Springs. Sorry for those who wanted to get back there. I have somewhere else in Banff in mind that is not downtown so parking should be fine for the little beauties.

Please bring your familiy band radio if you have 1 as I will bring mine along.
