996 Rescue

Bring a Trailer, one of my favourite sites, posted a 1999 996 C2 for sale this morning in San Diego. Very presentable car, black on black, tweeked to 350 BHP, lowered stance, reasonable price. What's not to like?

The major caveat.... the owner has swapped out the 3.4, and shoehorned in a Chevy smallblock. What was he thinking, building an LS1 Carrera? If we allow this sort of thing to be accepted, where would the madness stop? WRX 356's? Wankel'd 914's? Diesel Cayenne's? It certainly wasn't in my plans, but the purist in me is demanding that I should just rescue this poor mistreated orphan, bring it home, and spend this winter in the shop bringing it back into the Porsche family.

Before I pull the trigger, does anybody know if a 928 engine is roughly the same size as an LS1?

There is a WRX 550 Spyder in town, but I don't know about a 356. I know a Wankel 914 has been done (as well as Electric, Chevy 350, and WRX), and the factory offers a Cayenne Diesel. I'm assuming you were being satirical.

I don't think a 928 engine will fit because the overhead cams make the engine wider. According to the Corvette's Chief Engineer that's why the Corvette does not have DOHC.

Yep. I was just shocked they were able to get a V8 in there - such a ridiculous idea that a 928 engine didn't seem that far fetched (but no, I wasn't seriously considering it).

But, more seriously, the BAT guys mention that the LS1 weighs in at 100 lbs less than the 996 engine. Can that be accurate?
